Cary Feldman and Matthew Freedus Limit Sentence for Union Official Guilty of RICO Conspiracy to Probation and Home Detention
On July 9, 2004 United States District Judge Sim Lake of Houston, Texas sentenced four United Transportation Union officials who had pled guilty to participating in a RICO Conspiracy involving the Union's Designated Legal Counsel Program. Judge Lake is the same judge who recently sentenced a Dynegy executive to 292 months in prison for his role in a corporate fraud scheme, and who currently is presiding over the criminal indictment of Enron chief executives Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling. Two of the defendants in the RICO case were sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay fines. Mr. Feldman and Mr. Freedus were able to persuade Judge Lake to sentence their client, John Rookard, to probation with a special condition that he serve six months of home detention. No fine was imposed. The fourth defendant was also sentenced to probation, but was required to pay a fine as well.
