FLTF to Present at NHSA's 37th Annual Conference
Back to Basics: Best Practices in Head Start Grants
Who?
- Is your program a new Head Start or Early Head Start grantee? Or has your program been in existence for a long time? Either way, best practices in how you handle and manage your grants matter!
Why?
- Because Head Start programs have undergone intense scrutiny for years. Yet in this current climate of transparency and accountability, and with millions of dollars under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (“ARRA”) directed to federal Offices of Inspectors General for programmatic audits, scrutiny for programs like Head Start and Early Head Start is now more intense than ever.
Join Ted Waters and Zoë Beckerman, of Feldesman Tucker Leifer Fidell LLP, leading legal authorities on Head Start and federal grants issues, at the National Head Start Association’s 37th Annual National Conference in Dallas, Texas, for a 2-day, live Special Track to learn best practices for Head Start and Early Head Start grants. There are only 200 spots available. Act quickly!
When?
- A 2-day session: 9am - 5 pm, Monday, May 3 and Tuesday, May 4, 2010, during the NHSA Pre-Conference.
What Does This Live Training Cover?
- Our Special Track, Back to Basics: Best Practices for Head Start, focuses on ensuring that both new and long time Head Start and Early Head Start programs correctly identify and interpret the basic grants administration and management rules and minimize your exposure to risk.
Participants will leave this session with:
- Knowledge of how to handle hot topics in Head Start that are risk areas for on-site program reviews as well as OIG audits;
- Increased comprehension of selected Cost Principles; and
- Further understanding of selected elements of the Grants Administration “Common Rules.”
Specifically, we’ll cover a wide range of topics, including:
- Non-Federal Share for Head Start and Early Head Start;
- Time and Effort Reporting, Record Retention, and Why These Matter;
- Cost Allocation and Blended Funding Issues;
- Head Start Human Resources and Personnel Topics, including Nuances in Hiring and Firing;
- Staff Qualifications;
- And more!
Who are the Trainers?
- Edward T. Waters, Esq., Managing Partner, Feldesman Tucker Leifer Fidell LLP J. Zoë Beckerman, Esq., Partner, Feldesman Tucker Leifer Fidell LLP, Managing Principal, FT Solutions Ted Waters and Zoë Beckerman represent Head Start and Early Head Start organizations across the country. They also present webinars for the National Head Start Association’s Legal Advisory Service (“LAS”) year-round. For years, the LAS has provided high quality, cost effective training for Head Start agencies. In all of their trainings — both live and online — Ted and Zoë identify and break down the laws and regulations that govern Head Start management, what each means on a practical level, and how you can help ensure that your program is in and will stay in compliance.
What Materials Do You Get?
- Due to our extensive Head Start experience, we know what questions and concerns plague Head Start organizations. So we’ve prepared materials to address these issues. We do our best to ensure that all participants receive the most up-to-date information, presented in easy-to-understand formats. To provide you with the tools you need to do your job, this session delivers handouts that include checklists, practical tips, and step-by-step instructions for you to take back to your organization. In addition, we’re going green! We’ll provide each participant with a 2-gig thumb drive of your very own that includes copious amounts of supporting laws, regulations, and documentation needed in Head Start and Early Head Start. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of room to spare on the thumb drives, so you can keep using yours long after the live training session! (Another benefit: a thumb drive library much easier to transport home!)
