Marna S. Tucker Appointed Co-Chair of the American Bar Association Education Commission
The American Bar Association (ABA) launched a national civic education initiative by creating the Commission on Civics Education in the Nation’s Schools.
The Commission was appointed by ABA President Stephen Zack, who challenged the group to serve as an advocate for civic education in American schools and to promote the implementation of effective and high-quality educational programs.
Marna S. Tucker was appointed Co-Chair of the Commission which is composed of 20 distinguished jurists, lawyers, educators and organizational leaders. Retired Supreme
Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor will serve as a special advisor to the Commission.
“None of us are born with an understanding of the law or our system of government-it must be taught. Lawyers can use their training and education to ensure that every young American knows basic civics. The future of our country depends on it,” Zack said.
The Commission will shape and guide the ABA’s long-term efforts to encourage lawyers to ensure that all students experience high quality civic learning President Zack has identified three initial approaches for the Commission’s work, which are national civics and law academies, a national civics test, and advocacy for civic education.
