About Us

We are a Washington law firm utilizing decades of experience in our practice areas to provide the highest-quality representation to our clients.  Founded in 1970 with the mission of advising federal grantees, the Firm remains at the forefront of federal grants law, but in the ensuing years has also developed significant boutique practices in other areas.

  • Family law - Consistently recognized by its peers as a leader in family law, the Firm’s domestic-relations group handles some of the most complex and sensitive proceedings on behalf of individuals living in Washington D.C. as well as suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia. In addition to using traditional legal tools to get results for our clients, our family practice emphasizes collaborative law as an alternative to litigation, recognizing the emotional toll that divorce and custody proceedings can have on individuals, particularly children. A senior member of the Firm with deep experience in trusts and estates also works closely with the family group.
  • Federal Grants - Having participated in its development into a coherent field of law over the past 40 years, our federal grants group represents a wide array of non-profits, universities, and governmental entities receiving funds under an equally wide array of federal grant programs.  We have particular expertise in representing community health centers (also known as federally qualified health centers) and Head Start programs across the country; we also represent the National Association of Community Health Centers and the National Head Start Association, the leading member associations in their fields.
  • Health Law –Owing to our representation of public health grantees, the Health Law Practice Group has emerged with expertise in public sector health insurance programs (such as Medicare and Medicaid) as well as the federal laws and regulations applicable to organizations that provide health care services.  Today, the Firm provides a full range of legal services (transactional, regulatory, and litigation) to a diverse cross-section of health care providers, provider networks, and health plans, with an emphasis on the prevention of improper conduct through the implementation of effective corporate compliance programs.
  • White-collar - The Firm’s white-collar litigation group represents individuals in all stages of the criminal process, including grand-jury proceedings, pretrial proceedings, trial, and appeal. Our white-collar clients include corporate officers and directors, governmental officers, and other private parties. The federal government also frequently engages our white-collar group to defend governmental officers in civil litigation brought against the United States under the Federal Tort Claims Act.

Throughout our existence, we have remained true to our public service origins.  While we still represent numerous community health centers, community action agencies and Head Start programs (programs that originated with the Johnson War on Poverty), our attorneys remain actively involved in public service, serving as leaders in numerous capacities at a local and national level.   Regardless of background and practice area, however, we all share a common commitment--to excellent client service, professionalism, and results.
