Professional Information:

Matthew S. Freedus is a partner at the firm and practices in its health care, litigation and white collar groups. His practice involves counseling and representing corporate and individual clients in white collar criminal and complex civil matters, including grand jury, Office of Inspector General (OIG), and False Claims Act investigations. In addition, he assists clients in conducting internal corporate investigations and developing compliance programs.

▪ Conducted internal fraud, waste and abuse investigations of private and non-profit corporations’ participation in federally funded programs
 
▪ Representation of individual in Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) prosecution
 
▪ Representation of individual during grand jury investigation of alleged Export Arms Export Control Act violations
 
▪ Representation of government officials in: 9/11 related witness tampering investigation; contempt proceedings; Bivens action related to 9/11 detainees; and Bivens action related to provision of medical care to immigration detainees
 
▪ Representation of individual in interpleader action concerning insurance benefits
 
▪ Representation of media organizations seeking First Amendment right of access to military justice proceedings



Mr. Freedus has conducted several criminal and civil trials, both jury and non-jury, and represented clients in federal circuit courts of appeal and the U.S. Supreme Court.

 

Before joining the firm, Mr. Freedus served as a judge advocate in the United States Navy and represented service-members facing charges of, among other things, espionage, mishandling of classified information, homicide, fraud, and larceny. He continues to represent service-members in a variety of criminal and civil matters.

 

Mr. Freedus has written articles, and served as a commentator for national and foreign media, on criminal and military law.
