This month’s FTLF Family Law Spotlight Series highlights FTLF Family Law Partner, Emily C. Baker.

Emily is an experienced family law attorney and a trained mediator. She advocates for her clients’ priorities when guiding them through complex and unique cases. Emily represents clients in Virginia and Washington, D.C., in all aspects of family law including divorce, child custody, assets and property division, and more.

Q: Why did you become a family law attorney?

A: In my third year of law school, I had the unique opportunity to participate in a clinical program at the Community Legal Practice Center. We provided legal services that included countless family law matters and witnessed the real impact an attorney could have on a person and their family. I enjoyed supporting my clients and developing customized solutions to guide them out of challenging situations toward a better future.

Q: What are two things you enjoy about your practice and why?

A: I could not ask for a better group of attorneys to work alongside. It is motivating to be on a team committed to our client’s goals and each other’s success.

Secondly, the multidisciplinary aspect of family law allows me to have a broad body of knowledge to practice. Each case has its unique facts and a different spin on the issues.

Q: When you’re not practicing law, what are some things you enjoy doing?

A: I enjoy spending time with my family and traveling to explore new hiking trails.

Q: What advice would you give your younger self?

A: There are many different ways and paths to achieve your goals. It doesn’t matter if you achieve something a different way or on a different timeline than someone else. Just keep your eye on the prize, and you’ll get there with hard work and tenacity.

Q: If you were not a family law attorney, what would you do for a living?

A: I would have been a marriage and family therapist. I love the counselor aspect of my job and want to help people work through complex relationships and family dynamics.
