The federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the Department of Health and Human Services makes grant funds available through the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, and the Center for Mental Health Services. A large proportion of SAMHSA grant dollars are distributed through the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant (SABG) and the Community Mental Health Services Block Grant (MHBG). Block grants provide states with the flexibility to address their unique behavioral health issues and are accessible to both public and private non-profit organizations across the country to help grant funding, either directly from the federal government or through the state block grants.
